Landscape Design

Balance of Design Elements

A very formal house with symmetrical features might arguably warrant equal symmetry in its landscape design. In theory, that may hold, but most homes are not designed that way. As such, asymmetry tends to rule the day regarding most landscape designs. That said, there are many things besides the number of plants to consider when creating "balance" in a landscape, such as color, texture, height, materials, contrast, etc.

Things to Consider in Your Landscape Design

Regardless of the specific types of plants and hardscape materials you may choose for your landscape plan, a few guidelines will help you think through design possibilities. Keeping these guidelines in mind will help you boost your curb appeal and add value to your home or business and make your outdoor space much more enjoyable!

These elements play an essential role in creating points of interest and flow. Here's what we look at:

Why Is Landscape Design Important?

There are many, many options that are possible when designing a landscape. Many of the decisions are driven by personal taste as well as practical reasons. It is important to keep in mind that while there are so many varieties of plants available to purchase, your particular landscape design should take into consideration your soil type, the amount of sunlight vs shade, existing trees and their root systems, etc.

Additionally, there are certain types of plants that struggle, and are more vulnerable to pests and disease in our South Carolina humid environment. Our Arborist can help you choose the right plants for the right environment.

Another consideration is the speed at which plants grow. While we often like to choose plants that will grow up fast to perhaps make that perfect privacy hedge for example, many fast growers require a lot more maintenance throughout the year and you may find yourself having to pull out the sheers more often than you like! Additionally, many fast-growing shrubs often outgrow their space and can create a security risk if they cover windows or doors around your home.

With so many things to think about, you will find it helpful to give HomeScape Carolina a call so that we can help you work through the process.

Sod Installation

Are you looking to transform your dull, lackluster lawn into a lush, vibrant green space? Look no further than HomeScape Carolina! Our team of experts is dedicated to providing top-notch sod installation services that will transform your outdoor space into the envy of the neighborhood.

Sod Installation Benefits

A new lawn offers numerous benefits, including improved air quality, reduced soil erosion, and increased property value. Sod installation – instead of sprigging, plugging, or seeding- offers immediate results and satisfaction! All of our sod is purchased locally for maximum climate adaptability.

How Do Sod Installation Services Work?

  • We begin with a soil analysis to determine a starting point that will guide us throughout the installation process and help us develop a post-installation maintenance plan.
  • The second stage is the removal of the old lawn – which usually includes lots of weeds – and any grading that needs to be done.
  • Third, a layer of premium topsoil is installed, blended, and smoothed out to create the perfect planting environment.
  • Forth, a low-nitrogen starter fertilizer is distributed and raked into the soil before planting to ensure the sod gets off to a good start. The fertilizer will focus on good root development.
  • Lastly, the sod is planted and cut in precisely to give the lawn a finished appearance.
  • After the planting, the sod is watered in and double rolled to eliminate potential air spaces and ensure good root and soil contact. Special post-planting watering instructions are explained, and any final questions are answered.

From start to finish, we handle every aspect of the installation process, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience.

So why wait? Give your outdoor space the makeover it deserves. Contact HomeScape Carolina today!

Plant Care Programs

The landscaped environment is never static but ever-changing in varying degrees. Aging plants, soil chemistry, water conditions, shade from growing trees, and a myriad of other factors necessitate a focused and integrated approach to plant care that is adaptable to changes in each environment.

HomeScape Carolina considers the entire landscape when designing a program unique to your needs and goals. Whether it be pruning, fertilization, mulching, soil rejuvenation, or protection from insects or disease, HomeScape Carolina has a range of preservation solutions for your trees and shrubs.

Call us today to see how HomeScape Carolina can begin the transformation you need for your landscape.

Tree Pruning

Like all living things in the landscape, trees need continual care - and pruning is no exception. Often trees enter premature decline for a lack of proper care. Unfortunately, poor pruning practices employed by utility companies, homeowners, and untrained professionals often lead to rot and stress, setting up host conditions for insects and disease. If left unchecked and untreated, the result is typically premature decline and death. Additionally, rot introduced through poor management practices on larger trees can destroy property from falling branches and life-threatening situations for people and animals.

At HomeScape Carolina, we focus on prevention through preservation. By employing the science of proven arboricultural best practices, our approach to tree pruning promotes the tree's health, vigor, and overall well-being.

We believe that properly caring for trees is a job for trained professionals. That's why we have a team of skilled and experienced tree care specialists with the knowledge and expertise to take care of your trees the right way. Contact us today to learn more about our services and how we can help keep your trees healthy and beautiful.

Shrub Pruning

Good pruning practices for shrubbery involve removing dead, diseased, or damaged branches and shaping the shrub to maintain its natural form and encourage healthy growth. Proper pruning can also help to increase the flow of light and air within the shrub, reducing the risk of disease and promoting healthy growth.

That's where Integrated Pest Management (IPM) comes in. This science-based and common-sense approach is an effective way to reduce the potential for pest and disease problems. Our team of experts at HomeScape Carolina is trained in the latest IPM techniques and practices. We use a combination of cultural, physical, biological, and chemical controls to keep pests and diseases at bay without compromising the health of your landscape. Tree and Shrub Deep Root Fertilization

What Is Deep Root Fertilization?

Deep root fertilization is a method of fertilizing trees and plants that involves applying nutrients directly to the root zone. This type of fertilization aims to provide plants with the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development, especially for trees with a deep root system.

The process typically involves injecting a mixture of fertilizer and water directly into the soil around the tree's roots. This allows the nutrients to reach the roots more efficiently and effectively, as they are not lost to runoff or absorbed by other plants.

Deep Root Fertilization Benefits

Deep root fertilization is beneficial for trees planted in urban or suburban areas where soil compaction is common, and the soil may lack nutrients. By providing these trees with the nutrients they need, deep-root fertilization can improve their overall health, increase their ability to resist stress and enhance their overall growth.

It is important to note that deep-root fertilization should be performed by a qualified arborist or horticulturist with the knowledge and expertise to determine the right type and amount of fertilizer to use and who can perform the injection process safely and effectively. We can deliver precise amounts of nutrients exactly where needed to promote healthy and vigorous growth.

Contact us today to learn more about our deep-root fertilization services and how we can help you achieve a beautiful and healthy landscape.

Tree Root Flare Excavation

Why is Root Flare Exposure Important?

In urban landscaping, burying the root flares of trees has become a widespread problem, leading to a range of serious issues. The root flare is the foot or anchor of the tree, composed of buttress roots, and should be exposed to air so that the tapered part of the trunk meets the ground and is visible. When the root flare is buried, it invites stress factors to develop, including fungal wood decay and girdling roots.

Mounding mulch or soil at the base of a tree can cause fungal wood decay, compromising the vascular system and the tree's structural stability. The constant moisture also causes dormant buds to emerge from the bark of the buttress roots, leading to irregular girdling roots that grow parallel to the trunk and over the buttress roots. Girdling roots restrict the vascular system, cause abrasion on top of the buttress roots, and can graft into them over time, leading to severe issues.

How Does Root Flare Excavation Work?

By exposing the root flare, the damaging girdling roots can be identified, pruned, and removed, preventing them from growing in girth and restricting the vascular system like a rubber band around your finger. After the Root Flare Exposure treatment, the base of the tree is clean of damaging girdling roots, and it can grow unharmed from girdling roots and fungal wood decay. Therefore, it is important to avoid burying the root flare of trees and ensure that they have enough space to grow unimpeded.

Compaction Remediation

If you have trees on your property, you know how essential they are to the beauty and value of your home. But did you know that soil compaction around trees can significantly harm their health and limit their growth? Soil compaction can reduce oxygen and water availability to the roots, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiencies, branch dieback, and even death.

What Is Soil Compaction?

Soil compaction destroys the structure of the soil by collapsing the macropore spaces that allow for moisture and air infiltration. Soil compaction can cause stress to a tree and deprive it of essential water and oxygen. Compaction can also contribute to soil degradation and loss of soil fertility over time.

How Does Compaction Remediation Work?

Remediating soil compaction is essential to maintaining healthy trees. We employ an Air-Spade tool, which uses compressed air to till and breaks up the soil without damaging the tree's roots. We also use it to incorporate compost and other organic soil amendments to improve soil structure. Typically, we top the tilled soil off with a few inches of mulch to help limit re-compaction and further improve root-growing conditions.

Certain types of soil – particularly heavy clay - are naturally prone to compaction. But compaction can happen or be exacerbated through mechanical means such as heavy machinery, automobiles, and foot traffic.

If you suspect you have compaction issues around your trees, please contact us for a consultation. Decompaction should always be undertaken as part of a larger plan to limit ground exposure around trees to future compaction.
